The Network for Medieval Arts & Rituals (NetMAR) project of the Research Unit for Medieval Arts and Rituals (EMOMET) of the University of Cyprus invites you to participate in the second NetMAR Stakeholders Workshop for cultural and tourism professionals operating in Cyprus. The workshop will take place at the ‘Stelios Ioannou’ Learning Resource Centre – Library of the University of Cyprus (Room LRC 012) in the morning of 9th November 2022, between 09:00 am – 12:30 pm.
The keynote speaker of this workshop will be Ms Patricia Alberth, Director of the World Heritage Centre of the German city of Bamberg, the medieval part of which has been incorporated into the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The medieval town of Bamberg, which has been preserved unchanged, includes important monuments such as the cathedral with its four towers and the old town hall.
The workshop will also include a thematic round table discussion. Selected contributors will briefly develop their experiences and suggestions on how NetMAR could support the efforts of an original exploitation of Cyprus’ rich medieval heritage to achieve economic and social benefits.
NetMAR is a pan-European network with international partnerships involving the University of Cyprus through EMOMET and two centres of excellence abroad: the Centre for Medieval Literature (CML) at the University of Southern Denmark and the Centre for Medieval Studies (ZeMas) at the University of Bamberg in Germany.
One of NetMAR’s core missions is to network between academics, culture and tourism experts, artists and craftspeople, state and local authorities, NGOs, and other policy makers in order to jointly find exciting and original ways of exploiting our country’s rich medieval heritage in the fields of culture and tourism.
To achieve these objectives, NetMAR has undertaken to organise activities through which all stakeholders can freely exchange their views and expertise. Their participation and contribution to this second workshop will open new paths towards the exploitation of our country’s rich medieval heritage.
NetMAR is an international network that pairs the University of Cyprus and its Centre for Medieval Arts & Rituals (CeMAR) with two advanced research centres: the Centre for Medieval Literature of the University of Southern Denmark and the Centre for Medieval Studies of the University of Bamberg in Germany. One of the chief missions of NetMAR is to bring together academics, industry experts, local and governmental authorities and NGOs, and policy-makers with a view to finding exciting and original ways in which the rich medieval heritage of Cyprus can be mobilised for social and economic benefit. The medieval history of Cyprus, its long and rich heritage of medieval rituals and arts, can make Cyprus an even more desirable destination for tourists than currently is, while this heritage can also be commercialised by local industries and businesses.
NetMAR is committed to soliciting the views and advice of experts from local industry and SMEs, from artists and artisans, local, municipal and state organisations from all over Cyprus. This workshop in a series of three events (the previous 1st workshop that took place in January 2022 and a networking conference that will take place in November 2023) will seek to do exactly that, and we would be honoured and grateful to have you with us.
