The internationally acclaimed student team OCEANOS NTUA of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) officially unveiled its first solar-powered vessel, marking a new chapter in its journey towards developing innovative and sustainable technologies for the shipping industry of the future.
Founded in 2016, the team has already achieved significant international distinctions, most notably first place at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Today, it takes the next step by entering the demanding Solar Class category, reaffirming its continuous evolution and pioneering spirit.
The official presentation of the new vessel took place on 29 October 2025, at the War Museum of Athens, showcasing the team’s progress, work, and vision for a greener and more efficient maritime future. Greetings were delivered by NTUA Rector Professor Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou and Professor Grigorios Grigoropoulos from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, who also serves as the scientific supervisor of the team’s work. Both praised the students’ dedication and achievements, expressing their deep pride and emotion for their success.
Visitors had the opportunity to explore first-hand the cutting-edge technologies developed by NTUA students, combining scientific knowledge with practical innovation. The new vessel operates exclusively on solar energy, using only a small auxiliary battery for ignition. Thanks to high-efficiency photovoltaic panels and the integration of advanced hydrofoils, the hull of the vessel rises above the sea surface, drastically reducing hydrodynamic drag and increasing energy efficiency.
This project stands as a flagship example of NTUA’s dynamism within the international academic community, combining scientific excellence, engineering precision, and environmental awareness. At the same time, it strengthens Greece’s presence in a field that is set to shape the future of global shipping.
