Frederick University: highlight design, the new European Bauhaus, and the role of higher education towards sustainability

Event at Frederick University to highlight design, the new European Bauhaus, and the role of higher education towards sustainability

Thursday, October 30th at Frederick University’s Architecture Building

Frederick University is organizing an event titled “Exploring Green Futures in Design Education”, featuring talks, presentations, and workshops that explore how art, design, and innovation can contribute to a more sustainable future.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 30th, from 18:00 to 20:00, at Frederick University’s Architecture Building, in Nicosia.

This event is part of the EU-funded project “Futures Designed: Integrating the New European Bauhaus into Art and Design Education”, and brings together educators, designers, artists, and anyone interested in sharing creative practices that connect education with environmental and social responsibility.

As part of the event, Mustafa Afsaroglu will present Pit-to-Table and Pit Board, a material made from olive pits that serves as a surface material. The Cypriot designer will discuss this innovative product and the idea of turning waste into beauty.

In addition, bioartist and researcher Marisa Satsia, founder of the BioCuriosities Lab, explores how biological materials and living processes can inspire new sustainable design approaches. Her talk bridges art, science, and ecology through hands-on experimentation and ethical innovation.

Dr. Anna Merry Economou, Assistant Professor in Frederick University’s Department of Arts and Communication and Coordinator of the Futures Designed project, will present the project’s vision for sustainable, creative, and inclusive education in Europe.

She will also discuss the online micro-credential courses developed within the project. These are free short-term training opportunities for students and creative professionals seeking to integrate sustainability principles into their work, and for art and design educators wishing to contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive educational model.

Dr. Economou will also lead the workshop “The New European Bauhaus in Practice”, a participatory session that introduces the values of the New European Bauhaus — sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics — through creative experimentation.

Doris Kailos, Assistant Professor in the Department of Arts and Communication at Frederick University, will lead the creative workshop “I am a T-Shirt Bag”. Frederick University invites participants to bring their old t-shirt and transform it into a reusable tote bag!
