University of Cyprus: “WISE”: New Project for the Development of the First Pilot Infrastructure for Wireless Charging of Electric Buses in Cyprus

The research project represents a strategic collaboration between the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus Public Transport group, SVMENERGY NET LTD, and the Strovolos Municipality.

The research project titled “Digital Transport Twin for Wireless Charging Infrastructure of Smart Urban Public Buses” (WISE) is a strategic partnership between the Photovoltaic Technology Laboratory of the University of Cyprus, Cyprus and Nicosia Public Transport, SVMENERGY NET LTD, and the Municipality of Strovolos. The project’s kick-off meeting took place on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, and aims to deliver new, sustainable, and efficient public transport services through smart urban technology for smart cities.

The WISE Project

Coordinated by the University of Cyprus, the project has secured a total funding of €599,992.80, of which €248,100 has been allocated to the University of Cyprus, under the “Collaborative Development” Call for Proposals of the Research and Innovation Foundation. WISE seeks to enhance cooperation between businesses and the research community to develop technological solutions within the Smart City Applications Priority Sector.

Aligned with the European Strategy for Sustainable and Smart Mobility and the vision for climate-neutral smart cities, WISE stands as a testament to excellence in research, technology, development, and innovation. The project promotes smart city applications by addressing sustainability and mobility challenges related to the decarbonisation of the transport sector, through an innovative solar-powered wireless charging infrastructure and a fleet control platform for electric buses.

This interdisciplinary collaboration primarily focuses on comprehensive intervention in the Digital Technologies Priority Sector, addressing zero-emission mobility challenges and contributing to the realisation of smart cities that play a pivotal role in advancing the decarbonisation agenda and combating climate change.

WISE builds upon the results of the successful research project EMS4PVBEV, a collaboration between the University of Cyprus and Cyprus Public Transport, which focused on developing solar-powered charging stations with integrated storage, managed by an advanced energy management system. WISE integrates clean energy technologies with artificial intelligence to support smart cities.

As part of the project, the first pilot wireless charging infrastructure for electric buses in Cyprus will be developed, powered by locally generated solar energy and supported by an energy storage system. This infrastructure will be implemented in Nicosia, which aspires to become the first fully integrated smart city in the country. The integration of this infrastructure into the city’s ecosystem aligns with the goal of building a smart and sustainable Nicosia, while delivering significant environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Finally, the project’s results are expected to play a key role in achieving Cyprus’s ambitious goals outlined in the National Energy and Climate Plan, promoting the country’s transition to net-zero emissions.

The project officially commenced on 1 September 2025 and will run for 24 months.
