SUMMARY:World Heart Day: Webinar on EU Cardiovascular Health Plan
DESCRIPTION:29 September 2025: 14:00 – 16:00 CET (Brussels time) \nCardiovascular diseases\, which affect the heart and blood vessels\, are the leading cause of death in the EU\, claiming 1.7 million lives each year. They also contribute significantly to disability\, early retirement\, and absenteeism\, which lowers the quality of life\, reduces life expectancy and decreases productivity. These diseases cost the EU around €280 billion annually due to increased healthcare costs and decreased economic output. \nTo tackle this\, the European Commission is developing an EU Cardiovascular Health Plan. This plan will emphasise on prevention\, early detection and screening\, care\, management and rehabilitation. A special focus will be on developing health checks for cardiovascular diseases to identify people at risk. The plan will use the opportunities offered by new technologies\, digital and personalised tools. It will also address the current gaps in research and innovation\, and existing inequalities between Member States and population groups. \nThe EU Cardiovascular Health Plan will strengthen the European Health Union and Europe’s leadership in health innovation. \nJoin us on World Heart Day for a stakeholder webinar to \n\nDiscover the preliminary results of the Call for Evidence\,\nParticipate in a discussion on key themes and ideas for the future of cardiovascular health in the EU.\n\nThis is an opportunity to learn more and contribute to this this key health initiative. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this conversation! \nMore information\n\nAgenda\nRegistration

SUMMARY:The Cyprus Institute: Round Table Discussion – Colour Matters: Colours and Colourful materials in New Kingdom Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Event Details:\nDate:              Thursday\, 9 October 2025 \nTime:             10:15 – 12:30 (EET) \nVenue:           This is an online event.  You are welcome to join us on Zoom (passcode: 297387) \nParticipants: See below \n\nColour is precious\, and for millennia\, the desire for colour has driven human ingenuity. Many of the early colour terms in the Egyptian language are related to valuable colourful materials. As early as in the 4th millennium BCE\, Egypt witnessed the invention of the first synthetic colours—Egyptian blue and faience—created to satisfy a longing for vibrant\, lustrous and enduring hues. But the truly remarkable ‘colour turn’ in this region took place some two thousand years later\, in New Kingdom Egypt (NK: c. 1550–1070 BCE)\, when there is an explosion of new types of polychromatic substances and effects\, creating a world abounding in vivid hues\, patterns and combinations of the exotic and precious. Glass\, polychrome faience\, and Egyptian blue are combined into completely new colourful objects of an often very complex nature\, combining various materials and techniques.\n\n  \nThis round table will discuss the interconnections between colour\, culture and crafts in this period. The round table will discuss the relationships between various aspects of colour in this period and interconnections of these aspects. This includes the scientific study of what these colourful materials are made of\, how they are produced\, where and by whom. We also ask what coloured substances can tell us about past cognition\, behaviour and culture. What knowledge was necessary to produce them and how is this practical knowledge reflected upon in contemporary texts? How did the advent of new materials shape the way people spoke and wrote about colour? How does technology influence these objects and how do the objects in turn influence the perception and experience of colour? \nThese questions will be discussed to highlight the exceptional character of this phase of the Egyptian culture and to demonstrate the potential of an interdisciplinary\, multi-perspective approach to the study of colour and colourful materials of this period. Such an approach has the potential to offer deep insights into the complex interrelations between technology\, knowledge\, innovation and human cognition in history. \nThe participants are leading scholars in their fields which allow for such a multi-perspective view and ideas coming in from a variety of standpoints. \n\nParticipants\n\nProf Dr John Baines (University of Oxford)\nKatja Broschat (Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie\, Mainz)\nDr Henning Franzmeier (The Cyprus Institute\, Nicosia)\nDr Anna K. Hodgkinson (Freie Universität Berlin)\nProf Dr Gianluca Miniaci (Università di Pisa)\nProf Dr Thilo Rehren (The Cyprus Institute\, Nicosia)\nDr Alexandra Rodler-Rørby (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften\, Wien)\nProf Dr Shiyanthi Thavapalan (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)\nProf Dr Andrew Shortland (Cranfield University)\nProf Dr David A. SUMMARY:Interdisciplinary Two-Day Conference on Enforced Disappearances
DESCRIPTION:3–4 November 2025\, University of Cyprus \nThe research project DISACT\, funded by the European Research Council (ERC\, Grant Agreement No. 101086935) and based at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Cyprus\, is organising an Interdisciplinary Conference on Enforced Disappearances\, to be held on 3–4 November 2025. \nThe conference is an international\, interdisciplinary\, and cultural event dedicated to exploring the historical roots and the legal\, political\, and forensic dimensions of the issue of missing persons. \nEnforced disappearances refer to the deliberate abduction of individuals by state or non-state armed actors during periods of political violence—such as authoritarian regimes\, civil wars\, or armed conflicts. This crime functions as an instrument of political control and intimidation\, not only during the conflict itself but also through the silence that follows. Perpetrators often conceal traces and remains\, leaving families in prolonged anguish and uncertainty. \nThis experience is deeply familiar to Cyprus\, where the trauma of the missing remains etched in the collective memory. At the same time\, the phenomenon continues to evolve globally\, as authoritarian regimes cooperate and carry out disappearances even beyond their national borders. \nThe DISACT project investigates the historical origins and underlying logic of enforced disappearances: when and by whom the practice was “invented\,” how it spread internationally\, and why specific victims are targeted. It also examines how societies and victims transition from violence to justice and peace through comparative analyses (Cyprus – Latin America) and the use of modern forensic methods. \n\nThematic Sessions\nThe conference sessions will focus on: \n\n\nThe historical origins of the crime and the logic of victim targeting (3/11\, 11:00–13:00) \n\n\nMechanisms of transitional justice and reparation (3/11\, 14:30–16:30) \n\n\nThe role and limits of legal frameworks (4/11\, 09:00–11:00) \n\n\nForensic identification of victims through comparative approaches in Northern Ireland and Cyprus (4/11\, 11:30–13:30) \n\n\n\nPublic Debate\nA public debate will take place as part of the conference on the theme: \n“Legal Activism and Engagement with the Violent Past”\, \nwith speakers Achilleas Demetriades and Professor Kieran McEvoy (Queen’s University Belfast)\,moderated by Professor Natasa Mavronicola (University of Birmingham). \n🕕 Monday\, 3 November 2025 | 18:00–20:00📍 Building “Anastasios G. Leventis”\, Room B108 \n\nDocumentary Screening and Art Installation\nThe programme will conclude with a screening of the internationally acclaimed documentary “Hold Still”\, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers (4/11\, 16:00–18:00)\, as well as an art installation dedicated to the missing persons. \n\nVenue\nThe conference — except for the debate — will take place at theStelios Ioannou Learning Resource Centre – Library (LRC 014)\, University of Cyprus. \n\nParticipation\nParticipation is free of charge\, but pre-registration is required via the online form:🔗 https://forms.gle/3yQJ93yGc8Rn8Aux5 \nAs places are limited\, registrations will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis. Remaining participants will be placed on a waiting list. \n📧 vasileiou.elpida@ucy.ac.cy🌐 disacterc.com
