SUMMARY:European Data Protection Summit: “Rethinking Data in a Democratic Society”
DESCRIPTION:On 20 June 2024\, we invite you to the European Data Protection Summit: “Rethinking Data in a Democratic Society”. This unique event brings together privacy experts\, technology specialists\, policy-makers\, and other influential voices to discuss how data protection can safeguard our democratic society. \nDate: 20 June 2024 \nLocation: Brussels and online \nProgramme: check the preliminary Programme and the 5 Concept Questions \nRegistration is open: REGISTER NOW \nIn an era where data is pivotal in shaping our digital landscape\, businesses\, governments\, and various entities can leverage this data to enhance services and make informed decisions. States act as key players in addressing and navigating these issues. They both establish and enforce regulations for responsible data handling and use this data for various purposes. As a result\, especially in recent years\, crucial issues have emerged on the role of states and the importance data play in this regard. \nOver two decades\, the EDPS\, the European Union’s independent data protection authority\, has provided an essential contribution to shaping the current privacy landscape. Taking stock of this experience\, we would like to use our 20th anniversary as a moment to bring to the public debate questions about the role of a state in times of ever-growing collection of information about citizens\, be it by private or public entities\, and the part that data protection should play in the modern democracies. \nThe discussion will touch upon the role of data protection\, its possibilities and limitations\, its successes and missed opportunities\, in contributing to the development of the fundaments of democratic societies. Through this initiative\, the EDPS seeks to foster and fuel the public debate on this matter by rethinking present and future needs. \nThe Summit aims to gather key stakeholders in the data protection world\, decision-makers and influential voices: those who shape the debate on democracies. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of this dynamic discussion. \nDiscover more information on the EDPS 20th Anniversary Website

SUMMARY:EU Green Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:Register now for the EU Green Week conference “Towards a water resilient Europe”\, on 29-30 May in Brussels.  \nWater is a vital shared resource to be passed down from generation to generation – essential for people\, for the environment and for a just\, sustainable\, and resilient economy. \nCitizens across the continent are facing a surge in natural disasters like droughts and floods\, which have made the EU’s water challenges more severe and brought a new awareness of the need for water-resilience. Pressures on water resources come from decades of mismanagement of this precious resource\, pollution\, and ecosystem degradation\, as well as from climate change. Worldwide\, the water cycle is out of balance\, closely intertwined with climate change and biodiversity loss\, with each crisis worsening the other. \nThe 2024 EU Green Week is part of #WaterWIseEU\, a campaign to stimulate an EU-wide conversation around water today and in the future. The campaign aims at fostering awareness and promoting positive\, collaborative solutions. Organisations across Europe are invited to join the campaign now.

The session intends to augment the operational efficiency of these models through PyTorch-native optimization strategies\, including model compilation\, GPU quantization\, speculative decoding\, and tensor parallelism. Participants will have the chance to evaluate the proposed optimizations in real-time on one of Europe’s largest supercomputers. These methods seek to significantly reduce inference times and optimize resource usage\, thus expanding the advanced models’ applicability across various computational frameworks and research initiatives.\n\nPrerequisites: As an intermediate-level tutorial\, we expect basic knowledge of Deep Learning\, and programming in Python. Additionally\, some experience in using HPC systems is helpful (Linux shell\, Slurm) but not mandatory. Participants are expected to provide a laptop with which they can access the HPC system. Access will be facilitated via individual accounts using the Jupyter platform.\n\nPresentation 2     |     11:15 – 12:15 \nEfficient Scaling of Machine Learning Models: Distributed Training\n\nPresenter: Charalambos Chrysostomou\, Associate Research Scientist\, The Cyprus Institute\n\nOverview:  This tutorial aims to provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of scaling machine learning models in PyTorch.
