University of Thessaly: MAGO: A game changer to build web applications for water and agriculture

This collaborative project will demonstrate novel solutions to enhance integrated water resources management for a sustainable agriculture in the Mediterranean Region.

These solutions, which will be demonstrated in Tunisia, Spain, France and Lebanon, will boost water use efficiency in agriculture, the use of alternative water resources and climate change adaptation (CCA).

Food security and water management in the Mediterranean Region are challenged by reduced water availability due to climate change, affecting agricultural production and the increasing population, stressing the demand for water and food. One of the main difficulties in tackling this challenge is the disconnection between research results with real market needs and end-users’ demand.

MAGO is the new PRIMA-funded project that aims at developing Mediterranean wAter management solutions for a sustainable aGriculture supplied by an Online collaborative platform. The overarching objective of the project is to make this connection between research results and real market needs and end-user demands, in the field of food security and water management in the Mediterranean region, especially focusing on the challenge of climate change. MAGO will develop WEMED, a collaborative platform with WEb applications for agriculture in the MEDiterranean.

It will introduce novel participatory processes for better water and innovation governance, enhance monitoring and modelling for better water use efficiency and soil conservation, and improve planning and operation of wastewater reuse systems in agriculture. The project ambition is to contribute with new solutions for Global Change adaptation. MAGO solutions will be demonstrated in Tunisia, Spain, France and Lebanon.

The project consortium consists of 11 partners: CETAQUA, Aigües de Barcelona, CSIC and Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) from Spain, INRAE and LISODE from France, University of Thessaly (UTH) from Greece, Institut National de Recherches en Génie Rural, Eaux et Forêts (INRGREF) and Ezzayra Solutions from Tunisia, American University of Beirut (AUB) from Lebanon, and Meta Meta Anatolia from Turkey. The project is coordinated by CETAQUA. The UTH team is led by Chrysi Laspidou, Professor at the Civil Engineering Department.

MAGO is awarded under the call for Management of Water 2020, topic 1.1.1: Ιmplementing sustainable, integrated management of water resources in the Mediterranean, under climate change conditions. This ambitious innovation action will complete its workflow in 36 months and will receive 2.5 million euros funding by the PRIMA initiative, under Horizon 2020, the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
