UNIVERSITY OF NICOSIA PARTICIPATED IN THE ONLINE BSEMAN ANNUAL ASSEMBLY AND CONFERENCE

The University of Nicosia (UNIC), a founding member of BSEMAN, was actively involved in the organization and successful completion of the event.

The Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Academic Network (BSEMAN) organised an online conference titled “Opportunities for International Research and Academic Partnerships” on Thursday, 18 March 2021. The event included presentations by experts on international networking and opportunities for research partnerships, as well as the proceedings of the Network’s 3rd Annual General Assembly.

In the opening session, which was chaired by Dr Michalis Kontos, the University’s representative in BSEMAN’s Coordinating Committee, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, the University Rector, underlined the importance of international academic networking. He praised the role of BSEMAN in promoting academic cooperation and research collaborations in the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean, reiterating the University’s commitment to the implementation of the Network’s strategic objectives. He also highlighted the challenges currently faced by universities, pertaining to internationalization, the Knowledge Square and Open/Citizen Science, the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs, the 4th Industrial Revolution and disruptive technologies, flexible learning, online learning and alternative methods of assessment, life-long learning, and finally, short cycle degrees and micro-credentials. He particularly emphasized the importance of university collaborations in meeting these challenges and pointed out the importance of the “European University” EU flagship programme.

In the following session, Professor Dimitris Drikakis, UNIC’s Vice President for Global Partnerships, delivered a speech on research opportunities under Erasmus+, ERC and Horizon, particularly with reference to research collaborations between EU and non-EU member states. In the afternoon session, members of the University of Nicosia faculty presented their research ideas, which they discussed with peers from the other BSEMAN member universities.

The next General Assembly of BSEMAN will be hosted in Cyprus in Spring 2022 and will be co-organised by the University of Nicosia and the European University of Cyprus.
